I threw this one out a while back and it received a lot of thumbs up as well. I still think Boyd has a lot left in him. But it is a good deal of two floundering candidates trying to bounce back and each has 2 years left on the deal.

I listened to a Boston podcast that the commentors starting to criticize Bloom for doing nothing. They were attacked him “for using duck tape to fix Red Sox’s holes”. I think that Bloom did a great job with the Mookie trade, but Bloom screwed up the whole other part of last year’s out-season. Bloom focused too much on the Mookie trade and getting under the luxury tax. Why did not he get the Mookie deal done in January? Why didn’t Bloom dump JBJ(yes, he had a very good year)? Bloom signed every cast off pitcher and place fillers possible. My big question to other Red Sox fans can Bloom manage the big market Red Sox? Sitting pat as every possible players sign elsewhere.

The Red Sox are not a playoff caliber team, but I don’t think you can blame Bloom for that. They have huge payroll commitments to guys like Eovaldi and Martinez who are probably untradeable and certainly not worth their contracts. Sale will return to pitching this year, but will he be any good right away? Probably not. Covid makes the possibility of high attendance unlikely, which means the Red Sox have no incentive to spend big with their current team. 2021 is a lost season for the Red Sox. There’s nothing Bloom can do about that. He is focused on the future and the long game takes time.

      • Look at what he did with the Rays, and look at where they are now… exactly!!

But how much of a budget does Bloom have to work with? Resetting was a good thing but Kennedy said the other aday they are not “all in”. I still think they will make a couple more moves, probably mostly via FA, for a SP, RP, 2B and CF. And maybe, like most teams this off-season, all their moves will come in one brief flurry.

Thanks for your comment. I have been confused by Bloom’s lack of activity. Bloom is practically saying to the fan base that we are tanking this year. If Bloom could have a resolution with Pedroia far sooner. He would have 46 million to fill the holes. Bloom was slow on the Mookie trade last year.

  3. JBJ for even a minor prospect would have been fine, and yes, he did have a great year so they would have most likely gotten something decent for him. In my opinion, Benny is still more valuable than Boyd only because his career has really just begun. I think he could have a bounce-back year with Cora’s influence as manager.
