I like Baty to the Rays, but not for the price in this trade. Rays won’t trade KK with a -9.7 value, so if that’s the goal here, to get 3 good players from the Rays for just Baty, it’s a no-go. I’d also be surprised if the Rays trade McClanny or Yarbs. Yarbs is the Rays #3 starter this year and McClanny has a decent chance to make the team out of ST.

KK is rumored to be on the trading block because the Rays tend to trade players when they get expensive or have negative surplus value. The Mets will ask for a good contract to go along with him and they’re in need of another SP. Assuming the Rays won’t accept low-level prospects in return (as in my previous proposal), the Mets will have to give up one of their better ones, and they have two who are similar – Baty & Vientos. But then TB would have to pick up the difference in surplus value with someone else. I suggested McC because he was drafted out of HS by the Mets, but it could be done with someone else.

KK is probably available for trade, that’s not the problem. My argument is that the Rays will not be trading KK with a -9.7 value when he’s expected to post 1.6 fWAR in 2021. His contract is fine in 21. His negative trade value is based entirely on the expectation that he will regress tremendously in his age 32 season (ie: 2022). That may or may not happen, but the Rays aren’t going to pay 75% of his 22 salary to trade him in 21. They can do that next year if they have to. So if the Mets or any other team wants KK in 2021, the trade value is going to be +/- $2-4M and I suspect largely tied to JBJ’s contract.
