Why would the Padres want a SS when they have the best SS in baseball who is under control for the next decade and a half? For this to even make sense, there would have to be a third team who needs a SS and has something to offer the Padres where they are weakest… The outfield, catcher, 1B, etc. As a team with a deep farm system, the Padres aren’t able to protect all of their assets currently, the last thing they would do is dilute their minors. As a team with two $300M players and the 2020 ROY in Cronenworth at 2B, plus two high profile utility players as backups, there is absolutely no chance they look for an infielder to help their team and it is for that reason they would be more likely to consolidate their talent by trading their 10-30 prospects for higher end and/or more risky prospects with high ceilings, so as to offer high quality upgrades for injuries during the season and postseason as well as avoid the roster crunch due to happen after the season when players must be exposed to waivers or added to the 40-man roster. To make a deal like this work, the recipe would be Crawford to the Tigers, Reds, Brewers, Rangers, etc. The third team offering a 1B/OF upgrade (OF Winker, OF Gallo) or top prospect at a position of greater need (SP Manning, OF Mitchell), would be of greater use than Abrams. Finally, the Mariners would need to take on salary dumps like Myers or facilitate a trade of Hosmer by sending cash to the third team.

A deal could be built around Abrams to the Mariners, Hosmer, Crawford and cash to the Rangers, and a couple high ceiling low minors prospects going to the Padres who they don’t have to add to their 40-man roster for a couple years.
