Cleveland is not going to decimate their major league club for 4 catching prospects, none better than their top catching prospect that they already have.

Holy cow, I did all that looking into this trade and it didn’t even dawn on me there were 4 catchers going back to Cleveland. Yikes.

I guess I overlooked them because it was essentially Keston Hiura plus a bunch of minor-league sluff going to Cleveland.

So, there’s a lot of extra value the Brewers lose here… mostly in roster spots. They have to clear 5 roster spots to get these guys in. I projected the roster cuts to fit these guys in:

#1- A catcher (For Hedges). The DFA’d player is likely going to be Maile. But the problem goes deeper… the Brewers aren’t acquiring Austin Hedges to stash him in AAA. So he’ll be on the big league club. But Nottingham is out of options. So Pina AND Narvaez both go to the minors, effectively tanking their remaining, but albeit small, value. Total cost: 2.8M

#2- Billy McKinney (For Luplow). McKinney is out of options and isn’t going to be much to lose. Cost: 0.6M. (3.4M running)

#3- Daniel Vogelbach (For Bauers)- Another out of options player. Cost: 2.2M (5.6M running)

#4- Derek Fisher (For Reyes)- Once again, out of options. However, this forces someone to go to the minors. Most likely the recently acquired Jordan Luplow, whose value will tank being stashed away in AAA. Let’s put it at a 75% reduction… Cost: 5M (10.6M running)

#5- Ray Black. He’d either be cut or moved to the 60-day IL.

So, that’s 10.6M the Brewers would need to either recoup in separate trades, or it’s just value lost.

Long story short: acquiring 6 rostered players for 1 isn’t going to happen.
