This trade won’t work for the Rays today, but maybe at the deadline. They let Snell and Morton go this offseason because they have their eyes on 2022 on, not 2021. They aren’t going to trade for any expiring big money contracts unless (1) the player in question is viewed as necessary to get back to the WS (not just the playoffs), (2) the Rays’ season has gone better than expected through July, as the Rays wouldn’t make this type of trade until then, and (3) the cost to acquire the player is reasonable and doesn’t hurt the 2022 on teams.

That said, I can’t see the Rays acquiring Story, even as great as he is. Adames is a good SS and can be moved in the offseason for 1-3 good pieces to better set up the Rays’ future. I suspect that’s the direction they’ll go. Also, the Rays do not need any starting pitchers as of today, so Gray wouldn’t be of much use (unless he’s having a killer year come July). Most importantly, KK is an asset to the Rays and it’s unlikely they’ll move him now that the season has started.
