This trade won’t work for the Rays. None of these guys are better than internal Rays options.

Carlos Santana is better than any 1B/DH options the rays currently employ. Getting rid of Kiermaier saves the rays some money to make another move and Taylor/Phillips is just as good or better than Keirmaier. Bubic gives you a long man/starter who is cheap and controlled. Taking on Santana’s deal is why i included Keirmaier as well. I will say that McKay probably would not be in the deal; it would likely be a lower level prospect; but to get the deal close to equal on this site i had to add a better prospect.

Diaz and Choi are the Rays 1B, with Diaz occasionally playing 3B. Diaz has a 110 wRC+ and 1.2 fWAR. Choi has a 127 wRC+ and 0.8 fWAR (he missed 1/2 the season because of injury). Santana has 113 wRC+ and 1.4 fWAR. We can argue who is the better 1B but it seems clear that none of these guys are head and shoulders better than the other. Put another way, there is no reason for the Rays to trade for Santana.

The Rays can get rid of KK and would probably like to. No argument there. He’s having a decent year (1.0 fWAR so far) but Phillips/Margot would do just as well for a lot less expense. Taylor doesn’t improve on that duo and would further muddy the active roster. To keep rookies like Brujan up, the Rays already need to move someone like KK or Phillips.

Bubic would be sent to AAA if the Rays acquired him. Dude has ERA/FIP/xFIP all over 5.0. No Rays pitcher can say that. Bubic also has negative fWAR. No Rays starter can say that either. He might be of interest for the future but his inclusion doesn’t help the Rays in 2021 and just muddies the 40 man. Probably not a fit.

I get why you think the Rays would be a trade option for the Royals but I don’t think these guys would be of any interest.

Hey i here ya man; you know the Rays better than I. I will say that i’ve always been a fan of the Rays too. Honestly i think Santana would be a nice fit their for a playoff run; but i understand it would require TB to make other trades to make sense. I follow the Rays a fair deal and have always been intrugued by Honeywell; and KC could use some more near-mlb ready options for rotation. Do you think there are any realistic trade ideas that would bring him to KC while improving your roster?

I hate to say it but I think Honey is likely to get moved in the offseason. The Rays have assembled soooo much pitching that it’s hard to see him breaking through with the Rays. The fact that he’s out of options also forces the issue.

Aside from Duffy, I don’t think the Royals have anyone the Rays would be interested in for the stretch run this year. That’s not to say the Royals don’t have good players, only that the Rays probably won’t want to spend what it takes to acquire them or that the Rays don’t have room for them. The Rays will be sellers in the offseason though, and I could see the Royals and Rays agree on a trade that includes Honey. Guys like Choi, Diaz, Wendle, and Yarbrough are all likely to be shopped by the Rays in the offseason, along with a number of prospects the Rays want to move to get ahead of a really bad roster crunch next year.

            So anything is possible.

I understand. So if the Rays deal for Nelson Cruz who do you think they would deal and who would lose at-bats/roster spot?

    • M P

I assume the Twins want near Majors pitching in return for Cruz, so a trade involving Honey, Strotman, Romero, Myers or Battenfield makes sense to me. Rays then add another piece to even out the trade value, preferably someone in need of Rule 5 protection.

As for the roster, adding Cruz pushes Meadows to the outfield which forces the Rays to move 1 of KK, Phillips or Margot, most likely KK or Phillips.
