Admittedly, I don’t understand or agree with all of the Rays’ trades for relievers, but this trade really strikes me as a head scratcher. Sanders in particular could be a valuable pitcher for the Rays next year, whereas Guduan looks like cannon fodder.

He is. Guduan’s value on paper is -1.1, which makes this trade a bit more lopsided. But we list it at zero under the assumption that he is not playable and/or would not be tendered.
You never have enough pitching and most relievers rotate from bad to great year-t0-year or in a single year, repeating this cycle frequently over a career.
The A’s have numerous pitching openings to fill and the Rays have have a gazillion Rule 5 pitchers, so I cherry-picked these 3.
Guduan was used when you want to save your other RPs fresh for the next game. If memory serves, he is NOT Rule 5.
Additionally his pitches have quality and when the light goes on he can morph into a nice keeper. Seriously.
Re: This trade. the BTV valuations here were such that I had to do it! If we keep one of those 3 pitchers it was worth rolling the dice.
LOL. I expect a lot of reliever trades by the Rays in the next month, but I expect the returns to be a bunch of Low A prospects with years of control. I doubt the Rays would want or have room for someone like Guduan.

As you hint, TBR have to move a lot of arms from their “Massive” accumulation: https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/rays
That accumulated depth has outlived it’s validity, expiration dates are here in masse & the time to re-distribute some arms as arrived..

I tend to agree & look forward to that Rays surplus becoming available again.
Rays’ RP Trades are inevitable but also a bit premature in this, a seller’s market.
