This is probably the most straightforward deal the Mets, As, and White Sox can make. There is a deal here to be had, but it depends on the pieces that the As want back, and if the White Sox are willing to move Vaughn to acquire an OF and 2B they need. I have a larger deal in the works to help the White Sox get a SP from the As in Bassitt or Manaea.

Can someone who downvoted for the Mets explain the rationale?

Nimmo is a free agent at the end of the season, and McNeil is easily replaceable.

Montas is a gem. He’s worth it.

Montas is a good pitcher but adding Kimbrel is a mistake. He’s an expensive bullpen piece who is no longer consistant and isn’t as good as the closer they have. I can’t consider Nimmo’s free agency as a priority when the Mets have to be the favorite to sign him to an extension or bring him back as a free agent at that point especially if has has a healthy season. Losing him and McNeil would significantly reduce the Mets offense as we would then need a new right fielder and 2B. Cano theoritically could step in at 2B but what does he have left, and the team is already short in OF with no real OF bench outside of guys who aren’t really outfielders. The gain doesn’t balance out the loss IMO. And I’m a Mets fan giving this a thumbs down.

Kimbrel is a FA at the end of the year, so you are just paying his salary now.

This has to be in context of other signings for the Mets, and OF, especially corner outfielders, this is where the depth is there in the free agent market.

Since Nimmo just signed on with Boras, he isn’t re-signing with the Mets. He just isn’t. So, I would rather the Mets trade him now when he has immense value, and the Mets have the deep free agent pool to add from.

I get not wanting to move McNeil, but the Mets need Montas desperately. He is by far the best, and also the least expensive option to acquire.

The Mets don’t have the prospects to simply trade out prospects for major league talent, and the Mets have position players that have value to other teams. Using this 3-team trade maximizes the Mets assets, while keeping the prospects intact to perhaps make a run at a 2B to replace McNeil.

I appreciate your response, but I think a deal where the Mets can trade both major league talent AND lower tier prospects is the best way to upgrade in the areas (SP3) that are not available in the free agent market.

I get why you wanted to do it. I just don’t agree with several of your points and still believe that this trade makes them overall worse. Despite an upgrade at SP3.

If the Mets signed Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, and Joc Pederson, would you feel differently?

  3. Corbin Graham

I’d be good with Bryant because of his flexibility. They absolutely have to be making room for Vientos and Baty right now and I know Baty is the hot name but I’ve seen Vientos and have been following him for a while. He is going to be an absolute beast at the plate. I have absolutely no interest in Schwarber or Pederson. Schwarber is really just a DH which isn’t needed, and Pederson is extremely inconsistant and wouldn’t really be much of an offensive upgrade if any.

  4. Thomas Trovato

Yeah, I get it. I just think the Mets need another starter, specifically an SP3, more than anything else for their entire roster. Good talk!
