$40M to the Reds is actually Votto going to the Braves. Got to figure that Votto would be ready to move to a contender if the Reds are going to go through a massive rebuild which appears to be the case. Reds move $35M or so in payroll but have to send some young guys to get it done. Braves send them back a ML ready SP and a AAA outfielder that isn’t far off needing a shot.

IMO there is zero chance the Reds would even think about such a lopsided trade. They lose far too much to get a a low end SP and Waters whose star is fading. With the DH now in play, the Reds could unload Votto for prospects w/o giving away Winkler and all the others.

No one is paying $25M for a 37-38 yo DH. To move Votto, or Moustakas, or Suarez or Akiyama, the Reds are going to have to take a bath. That’s ok IF they are going a true rebuild because they could then trade Mahle and Castillo for best prospect packages available.

Winker has limited value based primarily on his low cost/production which is about to take an arbitration hit. His bat is good and his defense is poor. Certainly not a star.
