The D-Backs are already rebuilding for 2023. With Pivetta struggling, the Red Sox need a starting pitcher. The D-Backs could sell high on overpaid starter Merrill Kelly, getting back quality prospect Jeter Downs (who needs to escape from Worcester’s Polar Park and its pitcher-friendly design in a pitcher-friendly league) and barely-over-replacement-level relief pitcher Hirokazu Sawamura. The Red Sox could plug the gap in 2022, stay in the playoffs race, and worry about Kelly’s salary and age-fading skills later. The D-Backs could see if Downs pans out in MLB and, in any case, save over $20 million.

DBacks don’t really need a middle infielder. They have one locked up for awhile. And another getting paid a lot of money.
