Kudos for creativity here. I like salary dump trades. I would imagine Caleb Smith would more likely be traded to a contender, but I can also see the case to the Jays here, and taking on Chen’s salary would be an interesting way to get him.
I agree with John, definitely creative here. But I don’t think the Marlins care as much about Chen’s underwater contract as other teams might. It’s like the Orioles with Chris Davis – there isn’t a whole lot of incentive to get out from under the contract if they won’t be competing until after he’s gone. I especially can’t see them giving up two of their top young arms to make it happen.
