I think the Giants will prioritize young talent in their return for Smith (and Bumgarner), rather than cost savings or MLB-level replacements. So I think they’d be less inclined to include Pomeranz, and less interested in Gausman or Duvall. If they’re trading with the Braves, they’ll be focused on tapping into some of the Braves’ better prospects.
That makes sense. My thought process was that they could dump Pomeranz, who has no value right now, for Gausman and potentially gain a good trade chip for this offseason or next summer if Gausman can build some value in a pitching-friendly park (HRs have been the big issue). But you’re probably right – they’d likely prioritize a higher-valued prospect. Perhaps Jenista and Tarnok or Weigel gets it done.
