The A’s and Giants line up well in a trade. The A’s need to add a starter to replace Tanner Anderson, and late inning bullpen help. Soria, Petit, and Hendriks have been overused the past month. With the trade, the A’s strengthen their pen with Watson/Petit/Soria in the 6th/7th, Smith in the 8th, and Hendriks in the 9th. I also think Bumgarner will pitch well at the Coliseum.

For the Giants, they get a major league ready talent in Barreto and a high upside prospect in Beck. It’s time to give Barreto a fresh start somewhere else where he’s not the guy “traded for Josh Donaldson”. It will hurt if he turns into a star across the bay, but this trade makes the A’s a serious Contender.

You’d have to also consider the roster implications here. If the A’s are adding three MLB pitchers to the 25 and 40, but subtracting only a position player, who are the other two being dropped? Presumably Schlitter from both. You could option Buchter to AAA, but he’d still be on the 40. And you’d need to add another position player to the 25 to replace Barreto. So while this makes sense, the practicalities could get very complicated.

Call up Bolt or Fowler as an extra OF while Piscotty is on the DL. Option Buchter.
