Just playing around with this. Doubt the Padres would do it, and Cano is unlikely to waive his NTC to go back out west. And this would probably make more sense after the season, when Myer’s salary jumps, as I had to add a LOT of money to make this work.

My thinking here: Padres relieve the outfield glut and can play Reyes and Renfroe pretty much everyday on the corners without having to play Myers out of position in center or sit all that salary on the bench, and Myers gets a change of scenery, which is probably needed at this point. Big question here is what’s the plan with Urias. If they still see him as the second baseman of the future, this obviously makes no sense.

For the Mets, pretty clear that it opens up second for McNeil, even if they end up rostering Kinsler for a little while.

I like the thinking — trading one bad contract for another one. But I agree that the big hiccup here is with Urias, who by all accounts is slated for 2B. Even if you switched Cano to 1B, you then have a problem with Hosmer — another bad contract they’re stuck with.

From the Padres’ perspective, the key to moving Myers will be to pair him with Yates, using Yates as leverage to take the Myers contract (along with some cash).
