Mets have no need in the middle infield unless they find a taker for Cano. I don’t think Urias meets the needs of the Mets.
But he is a valuable trade chip that can be flipped to meet their needs. Not every team has a prospect worthy of centering a Syndergaard package, but every team can at least fit Urias in the budget.
Yeah, I don’t love Urias as a fit for the Mets, and Lauer doesn’t have the kind of upside to be the second piece in a blockbuster like this. I think some combination of San Diego’s valuable young pitchers (Patiño, Morejon, etc.) and outfielders (Franmil, Renfroe, etc.) is more likely than Urias.
