The cash is to cover half of Duffy’s salary. The prospects are to attract Merrifield and Diekman services.

Bold! I definitely think the A’s could move some of their infield surplus this month. They’re giving up a lot of potential, but also a couple guys who have really struggled in the big leagues…which is why I think Kansas City might not accept. I’m also not sure the Royals are under too much pressure to move Duffy, since his contract will be off the books by the time they’re in contention anyway. I love Merrifield as a fit for the A’s, but I think the deal would need to include either Puk or Murphy to make KC bite.

There are four guys I hope the A’s hold on to, Lazardo, Puk, Murphy and Nick Allen. Sure anyone can be had at the right price but I liked what I’ve seen of them in Stockton. Allen is the best player on the Ports day in and day out. Certainly the best of the three 20 yr olds.

I also think the Royals would rather keep Duffy and the cash, but the deal works without them. A’s get a cheap star and a reliever. Royals get much needed depth. On an unrelated note, I’d like to see if Barreto can handle center. He certainly seems to have the speed for it.
