This trade proposal interests me. As a Braves fan, I’m 100% not supporting it. But it’s fun to discuss.

With Ian Anderson going to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Madison Bumgarner coming back the Braves the team will still have a few guys vying for a spot in the rotation. I’m hoping that it’s Mike Soroka’s to lose coming out of Spring Training and we’ll all be excited about his comeback. I wouldn’t count out Kolby Allard or Bryce Elder though. There’d be flexibility if it was Anderson in the mix rather than Bumgarner as there’s minor league options on him as well as Elder and Soroka. There’s no such opportunity to work the roster like that with Allard and there wouldn’t have been with Jake Odorizzi. The Braves paid $10MM of his $12MM and got back Allard, and this is clearly a big part of what drove that trade.

Look, Madison Bumgarner’s 2023 projections aren’t good, not at all. His past couple of years have been stinkers and on the Braves, a team that’s again a playoff contender, his projections are significantly behind those of Morton, Fried, Wright and Strider. Bumgarner’s a 5th starter at best on this team and he’s just not looking any bit better than these other guys that I’ve mentioned who could also be the 5th starter. At this point, Bumgarner is only amounting to a salary dump.

Madison Bumgarner’s owed $37MM/2. If he was on the Braves, he’d be the highest AVV for 2023. There’s very little relative offset with Anderson going to Arizona. There’s just no way that this team’s going to take that much salary on in the immediate term!

Sure, there’s the return on Lawlar to also consider. I’m not overlooking that. Lawlar looks like he might be able to play at an All-Star level. However, there’s no big thing in him for the contending Braves to get him now if Vaughn Grissom and/or Arcia is good enough for them. It’s just not a trade that makes any sense to me.

Why would the Diamondbacks want to give away one of the guys that could be one of their core players very, very soon? Isn’t that their path to contending again? Madison Bumgarner is a sunk cost.

How do you come down on seeing this as a good trade?

I’m looking at this as a Lawlar, for Anderson trade. That reminds me of the Swanson, for Shelby trade. If you ask me Lawlar could be that dude at SS for the future.
