Diamondbacks get athletic, glove first shortstop in Arias. He’s a few years away from MLB, so if he is successful he could be an impact player when the Diamondbacks are anticipating being more competitive. Also receive Clarke Schmidt, controllable starter with good stuff.
Yankees get Merrill Kelly to bolster rotation after injury of Montas. Current rotation has injury concerns (Rodon, Severino, German), and Schmidt is relatively unproven as a starter for a win-now team. Kelly is 34, but doesn’t have as much mileage on his arm as the typical 34 year old.
Diamondbacks get players to be competitive in the 2025-2028 years, Yankees get more certainty for the 2023-2025 win-now years.
