Yankees get Garrett Mitchell to play LF, adds left handed, speed, contact to lineup. Give up Gleyber Torres, retain some of his salary. Can play Peraza at short and Lemahieu/Cabrera at second until Volpe is ready (May or so).
Dodgers get Brice Turang to play short after Gavin Lux injury. Rojas remains the backup shortstop. Trade away Nastrini who is their #5 or so pitching prospect.
Brewers get Gleyber Torres to play second. Torres is a solid second baseman and above average bat, and provides more certainty than Turang in 2023. Sal Frelick can replace Garrett Mitchell, who has much more upside than Mitchell and has performed well in the minors. Also receive Nastrini from the Dodgers who is a pitching prospect. Brewers get rid of one of their many outfield prospects, and add a pitching prospect which they’re severely lacking.
Brewers say no thanks. They aren’t going to give up 12 years of Mitchell and Turang for 2 years of Torres plus Nastrini. Milwaukee has Urias playing 2B and certainly doesn’t want to pay Torres’ contract.
Brewers have Chourio, Mitchell, Frelick, and Wiemer all with 2023-2024 ETAs, plus 4 more years of Tyrone Taylor and 6 more years of Yelich. One of those guys needs to get traded. Torres makes them better for 2023, and really does not come at that high of a fiscal price.
Money is always an issue for the Brewers. Torres is going to cost somewhere in the $20-22M range in the next two years. For the Yankees that’s nothing, but for the Brewers with all their arby guys, that’s too much when they already have Urias at 2B. That’s money they could use to re-sign Woodruff. Turang is the heir apparent at SS if (when) the Brewers have to trade Adames. You’re right about Mitchell, he could go.
