Hmm… initial reaction.. why two prospects for two prospects?..
Logan Tanner is a perfect fit for a club like the Guardians.. Tanner brings the glove.. the tools of ignorance and, perhaps, his one weapon.. a hose.. Otherwise, he’s Austin Hedges.. all glove.. no bat.. CleFO likes that in a backstop, so not all bad..
Jacob Heatherly does nothing for either team.. He was a relatively high draft pick (3rd round?) that has a reasonably good movement on a FB and not much else.. His curveball is just a sometimes good pitch.. at this stage in his career.. it has to be a LOT better than that..
Nikhazy is too green to know what he is or will be.. but the tools are there and could be worth seeing.. Burns has yet to fully show anything that might be considered can’t miss.. Again.. tools exist.. but, seldom in evidence..
At the end of the day.. CleFO would be inclined to say no to Heatherly and want him replaced.. The two Guardian pitchers will not excite or dent the Reds top ten or even 20 prospects..
my thought on adding C Tanner similar to yours.. Nice fit: RH, age, profile.
Heatherly an add because of age, and being LH. someone else is fine, but I would try for lower age (rule 5) and LH. No disagreement.
Offered 2 pitchers of limited value , RH and LH. Each has some upside. Each rated in 2023 Cleveland Top 30. Albeit toward low end.
I considered value here on site also. neither pitcher would bring Tanner back, but both might.
that’s about it for my thinking.
I personally don’t think Cleveland would end up giving up Burns and Nikhazy for Tanner… Cleveland had a chance to get him and they skipped on it.
It’s also the fact Cleveland and the Reds have already made the Benson deal. I really doubt they would be making anymore right now. I don’t think the Reds will be moving him right now either.
Tanner was a second round pick in last year’s draft after Cleveland had three picks including the one before he was drafted… I am not saying Cleveland didn’t have him on their list but between skipping on all the college catchers and signing a ton of international catchers (6 in the last two signings) I don’t see Cleveland putting Burns or Nikhazy into getting him let alone both. Like, hypothetically, if they traded a Freeman to the Reds for some reason and got him included in the deal (Aka getting 2-3 prospects) then they would go for him, but not swapping a SP for him. Get my meaning?
Now, if they could get Tanner for someone like a Palacios/Tena/MIF prospect thats blocked then yeah, they would take it, but on paper they aren’t going to put SPs with solid floors (on paper of course) in a deal for a player in a position that they just invested 6 international signings plus a later draft pick into.
Personally I want another catcher for Cleveland and I would take Tanner, but Cleveland will only put up certain players and I don’t think the Reds would trade him for anyone Cleveland is willing to offer. At least that’s what it looks like to me. If you can find a MIF that the Reds want and doesn’t have a spot in Cleveland’s future then you have a deal…

I missed when Cleveland skipped on getting Tanner. When was that and what were the details of the opportunity ? Thanks
