I’ve never heard a Rays fan talk about World Series or Bust, plenty of how good their farm is, or individual players, but never World Series or bust. It’s still a bust for the Rays then, this package doesn’t come close to acquiring Ohtani. I think you got 1 Major League player going back to the Angels (Bradley) I think the other 3 are all lottery tickets, bubble candidates, edges of the roster type players if they make it to the show. I think the Angels easily pass on this. I would love to see the Rays commit to going for it (as well as a few other teams like the Brewers & Guardians) but it’s not in their dna. 😞
Sorry but I don’t think many Rays fans would agree that WS or Bust requires the Rays to go get the most expensive rental on the market. Rays have a very good team as is and will be getting Glasnow back in a couple weeks. A starting rotation of Glas, McClanny, Ras and Eflin in the playoffs is already better than any other team they are likely to face. Their bats lead the league right now in every offensive category. Maybe that doesn’t hold up all year but they are sure to have a top offense come playoff time if everyone stays healthy. Would Ohtani make them better? Of course. But they might be better served adding 1-2 high leverage shutdown relievers. It’s too early to say. But saying Ohtani is the missing piece and is a must add if the Rays are going to win the WS isn’t remotely true.
Rays have 2 Aces in Glas and McClanny and several Rays’ players are on pace for 40 HRs. Hell, Aroz is on pace for over 150 RBIs.
I’ll be blunt. Rays will not trade a top 25 prospect and nearly $70MM in total trade value for 3 months of Ohtani, and that absolutely does not mean the Rays aren’t “going for it.” Rays may trade for 2-3 players at the deadline that collectively cost $20-40MM but do not cost any top 100 prospects. That I can see.
For all the folks saying the Rays are “World Series or Bust,” this is what that looks like

Lol. I doubt you’ll find anyone who knows anything about baseball prospects who would agree with you that Basabe and Manzardo are lottery tickets.
Manzardo is a top 100 prospect that is hitting well in Triple A. That is far from a lottery ticket.
This package is more than the Nats got for Scherzer and Turner, which is probably equivalent in production.

Glasnow is never healthy. Dont think the Rays will count in him. I think they deal him at the deadline this season.
Couldn’t disagree more. Glas is key to the 23 season.
“But saying Ohtani is the missing piece and is a must add if the Rays are going to win the WS isn’t remotely true.”
Who said that? Not me. Not even remotely implied.
Ohtani is the missing piece on every team. Every team needs an ace and a 40 home run bat with a .360 OBP and is a plus runner.

How else should I interpret a WS or bust trade proposal that has the Rays paying a premium for a rental?
