Jays already have Chapman. If he hits the IL, Barger takes over for him. Espinal is the only guy on the team that can handle SS if Bichette goes down. This trade is DOA.
Yes, everything you’ve said is absolutely correct, don’t get me wrong. But the thing is Chapman is gonna be a free agent after this season, and with players like Guerrero, Bichette, etc. expected to be extended, the market for him is gonna be heated. Enter Tommy Edman, not only is he a left-handed bat, but he’s also a “Swiss army knife” when it comes to the infield. If this trade goes down, my theory is that they’ll use Edman at 2B until the season is over, then if Chapman were to leave, he could be moved to 3B with Barger moving up to 2B as a result.
All solid points. The Jays will have holes to fill at 2B and 3B at the end of the season. The problem is where to play Merrifield for the rest of the season?
From the Cards perspective you’re moving their starting second baseman for a utility guy, a decent prospect, one not so decent prospect. For a team with playoff aspirations this doesn’t make much sense for them.
