Why would the Mariners want cash instead of a prospect or major league talent? Kluber’s contract doesn’t look that bad, I think the M’s would want more for one of their top pitching prospects.
For the same reason any team would want cash, to help carry the financial burden, but if they want Arroyo instead I’d be ok with that. And I don’t think Hancock holds much value really, he is definitely a former top pitching prospect but not one anymore, admittedly there is some roll of the dice that he at some point could return to Prominence after battling a shoulder injury in 2021 and a right lat issue in 2022, he’s now in AA and struggling to a era of close to 6 with 20 walks in 30 innings but he does have 41 strikeouts in his 8 starts. So there might be something there, like I said, I think it’s a roll of the dice move for the Red Sox on the former #6 overall 1st rnd pick.
Deal Date June 15th
