A’s pick up a nice controllable RH bullpen option for stretch-drive 2019 and beyond, with Gyorko salary-dump for STL. Gyorko steps in primarily at 2B for OAK but also can backup other positions. STL replaces Gyorko’s versatility with Profar (controlled into 2020). Gyorko walks at the end of 2019 and opens the 2B position up for Franklin Barreto or Jorge Mateo in 2020. Alternately, A’s cut Gyorko immediately and hand the position for the remainder of 2019 to Barreto or Mateo.

Granted, STL probably unlikely to weaken bullpen simply for salary dump, and Gyorko may just be DFA’d in the near-future.

Gallegos has quietly become a fixture in the Cards’ bullpen. A’s could use him after Hendriks’ sudden struggles, but Cards prefer not to use someone as valuable as him just to dump an expiring contract. Even then, they wouldn’t want Profar because they already have a utility man: Munoz.
