A bit unrealistic, But I want the Rays to do something wild.

We’ll go step-by-step in the return for Betts:

Brujan- A no-doubt top prospect that could arrive late 2020/2021. Fills Red Sox hole at 2B long term(they have no real 2B/SS prospects and Chavis isn’t the answer IMO. Brujan will be blocked by Franco/Adames and doesn’t have the arm for 3B.

Honeywell: Another top pitching prospect who missed 2019 fracturing his elbow. Already dominated AAA. If healthy, he is major league ready relatively quickly. HUGE risk/reward.

Kiermaier: A quality player that is pricey for the Rays at 3/$33M from 2020-2022. Red Sox “eat money”, but may need to to make payroll room for the Rays to afford Betts. Has potential to be a really solid outfield option if healthy.

Wendle: A gap filler till Brujan is ready.

Aguilar: A mistake on my part….I wanted the lefty. Make it Choi instead. They are both out of options, which makes doing Rays things tough. A platoon partner for Chavis at 1B.

If Kiermaier is price, what about the year of Betts? Tampa would not do this.

I’m implying they can afford Betts for 1 year if Kiermaier is moved.

      • John Bitzer

I think that’s plausible. They’re in win-now mode, and despite their reputation for cheapness, they’ve shown an occasional willingness to pay bigger salaries for reliable stars that fit their window (e.g., Morton). Plus it’s only for one year and their budget is still relatively low.

While I can see Bloom and the Red Sox trying time get their hands on a few pieces from the Rays farm, I question the Rays desire to pay Betts some $30mill for one season, especially if their biggest benefit is just getting out of Kiermeier’s contract. The Rays do already have a good OF and are probably more into a 3b and some arms.
