The Rays have acquired 3 young catchers in the past 2 weeks and resigned their starter from last year. If the Rays wanted Contreras, I’m pretty sure they would have started with him. I also have to think the Padres could have gotten him in the fire sale trade they just completed with the Cubs, and they apparently didn’t want him either. If the Cubs are fortunate enough to trade him this winter, I don’t think they should expect a premium trade package. Rays say no to this trade.
