Cards recieving PTBNL and Cash in the trade. Official: https://twitter.com/Angels/status/1357532286556667908
The Cardinals are receiving a PTBNL.
Thanks for posting. According to Nightengale, the Cards are paying the bulk of the contract, which makes sense here. Note that he has a $14.5M salary, but he is also still owed an additional $2M from his original signing bonus, which is due to him this year as well. That’s why we show $16.5M due. We may never know if that was included in the deal or not. But the spirit of the deal here is that it’s just clearing a roster spot for St. Louis.
I thought signing bonuses stayed the responsibility of the signing team.
It’s never been clear as far as I know.
$12.75M is the official number going to the Angels, per reports.
Cardinals are also eating the signing bonus, according to Greg Beacham https://twitter.com/gregbeacham/status/1357538432122195969
So St. Louis is covering $14.75M out of the $16.5M owed?
Yep, looks like it!
This trade seems like a small stupid gamble for the Angels. The Cobb trade was a great signing, but why this trade?
I don’t see it as a gamble, since it cost them basically nothing. Fowler is a placeholder to buy some time for Adell and/or Marsh to get some more seasoning at AAA.
Kevin Pillar would be a much better choice. Better production and a bargain at 5 million. I have never understood the Angels who make major moves and then they get cheap with the rest of the team. Last year major acquisitions but then they buy rummage sale pitching. This Fowler trade is another Angels move.
Keeps a sweat warm while Adell and Marsh get AAA seasoning/service time manipulated then likely turns into a fourth outfielder.
Just hope the PTBNL is way down the list and I expect he will be.
So I think this is how the Angels are going to assess the outfield situation:
A: RF Fowler, CF Trout, LF Upton, then when Adell/Marsh is ready they do a platoon of either Fowler/Upton in left or Adell/Marsh/Upton in left.
B: RF Fowler, CF Trout, LF Upton, then when Adell/Marsh is ready they make a trade of some sort dumping Upton’s salary.
C: They trade Marsh for some pitching, like Marquez, and when Adell is ready, he platoons with Fowler or he gets RF and Upton and Fowler platoon.
Maybe someone here can explain this to me, but what is the benefit to the Cardinals in this trade?
It clears a roster spot, and saves them $1.75M.
In my humble opinion, that doesn’t seem like a huge benefit vs what the benefit is to the Angels.
There’s not much benefit to the Angels, since Fowler has very little, if any, value on the field left in him.
