Rays clear out salary and get a veteran starting pitcher.
Reds get defensive help in the OF and IF while also getting a MIF of the future.

Rays aren’t really clearing out much salary with this trade. Gray costs about as much as KK ($12MM to $10MM) and the Rays won’t have any trouble moving Wendle and his $4MM in a separate trade. Still, while the Rays don’t need to make trades to clear salary, they do need to add a dependable veteran pitcher to their rotation. I’d like the Rays to do better than Gray, but this trade would be a nice fall back if other possibilities don’t work out. Rays have internal replacements for Wendle and KK, so they can be traded for an arm. Edwards is a year away, and a lot can happen in a year, but right now he’s blocked at the MLB level. This trade works for the Rays. It’s not my ideal trade, but it works.

Yeah got one with a tick of approval 😛 I am quite bullish on Gray and was hopping they got him last year. I think Edwards is the definition of expandable with the talent both above and below (Greg Jones) him.

I wonder how Reds fans will feel about losing one of their key starters. But it’s interesting enough to run as a feature.

Agreed he is a key starter but probably #3 (behind Mahle and Castillo). With kids like Greene and Lodolo knocking on the door I don’t think Gray is that critical moving forward.

I’m ok with it, especially as he’s in the last year of his deal and we won’t be keeping him anyway. SP is a position of strength for the Reds and we have to use that if we want to improve the team in other areas of need, especially OF w/ Castellanos probably leaving. I like this deal as a Reds fan, Gray can be replaced by a combination of Greene/Lodolo next year.

Reds have a team option on Sonny Gray for 2023 at $12MM with no buyout. If Gray has a good 2022, I expect the Reds will pick up that option. Rays on the other hand might not.

Reds are not gonna trade an all-star pitcher and another prospect for two more middle infielders and an aging outfielder

What areas do you think the reds need to improve on ? I thought MIF and CF were the two areas of concern.

LOL. What do the Reds care if KK is getting long in the tooth if he can give them 1-2 years of defensive excellence plus an average bat? His contract is a 1 year plus 1 year option. Very little risk and the dude provided 2.5 fWAR in 2021. For 0.4M trade value, that’s a pretty good roll of the dice, but if the Reds don’t want him, take him out and the Rays will keep him (or trade him to someone else).

There seems to be a perception that the Reds are still looking for a shortstop. They are not. Kyle Farmer is their starter going forward, and he has earned that right with gold-glove caliber defense and fine offensive numbers to boot. Plus the Reds have Barrero waiting in the wings (assuming he can ever develop some semblance of pitch recognition at the ML level) and also McLain, who should be knocking on the door within the next two seasons.

They could use an upgrade in CF. Senzel could be that guy, except he has never been able to play a full season at any level in his career. Once Castellanos says goodbye the OF in Cincy is gonna need an overhaul. Unfortunately the Reds don’t have anyone in the minors ready at this time, which means they will have to look elsewhere. IMO Kiermaier is not the answer.
