This is based on an Oakland standard, 3-for-1 trade format with a small intra-division tax.
Seattle press had yet another story about the Mariners looking to add a RH bat, preferably at 3B. There was a lot of pre-lockout smoke around Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto liking Matt Chapman, with the most recent article bringing him up again by name.
Brandon Williamson represents the high-ceiling talent that Oakland would expect for two years of Chapman. Zach DeLoach is a high-floor outfielder whose skills enhance average tools. Can he stay in CF? The A’s gave CF playing time to Seth Brown so… yeah. DeLoach would have CF utility in Oakland.
Gabriel Gonzalez was a 2020/2021 International signee and made an outstanding debut in the DSL, hitting 287/371/521 over 54 games. He’s expected to start this season in the Arizona Complex League.
Wyatt Mills is the intra-division tax, Oakland can pencil him into one of their (many) bullpen holes.
I wish when people grade a trade there was someway to understand how they graded.
In the case of your deal, do the people that did not like the deal on the Marines side, think that they are paying too much, or give up a player that they would rather not, or just do not want Chapman in any case.
In the case of your deal, do the people that did not like the deal on the A’s side, are you not asking enough, or they just do not want to trade Chapman for any amount.
I think it’s an overpay for a soon to be (April) 29 year old with only 2 years of control and on the health side seems (hopefully) to be recovered from the hip surgery he had in 2020.
So thumbs up for the A’s but a very big thumbs down for the Mariners

It seems like there might be some confusion from the Mariners side by fans thinking this proposal includes Marco Gonzales, rather than Gabriel.
I think it really comes down to how you feel about Williamson. It sounds like a lot of scouts are really high on him which may mean his market value as a headliner may be more than implied here but overall this seems like a reasonable trade especially if the M’s miss out in FA.

I’m hesitant about this for one main reason: according to the latest fangraphs write up on Williamson (to be fair, its from ’21, the updated ’22 write up hasn’t come out yet) reports his fastball velocity doesn’t hold up late into games. The report suggests his velocity dips around the 4th – 5th inning, and that this is a regular occurrence. That’s a serious cloud hanging over the main piece coming Oakland’s way. Swap out Williamson with Hancock (his TV is only about 1.X higher) and im fully on board, provided Hancock’s shoulder passes medical inspection as he was shut down last season due to soreness.
I understand the concern but BA’s 2022 Handbook doesn’t raise that flag for Williamson. I’m a lot more worried about Hancock’s shoulder, given he was pitching once a week and still breaking down.
Like I mentioned, the fangraphs report is a year old. It therefore, doesn’t take into consideration his 2021 performance. Perhaps Williamson laid those fears to rest this past season. Perhaps fangraphs was mistaken. Either way, if velocity dip is a non-issue with Williamson, I’m fine with the deal however I would still tweak it by swapping Then for Mills. It adds 1.8 to Oakland’s incoming TV but, it should still, easily, clear the simulators approval. Then has the higher upside but, Mills could realistically help Seattle in their playoff hopes this year. Then ia about 2 years away from doing so, he just started A+ last season.
Going with Then is a fair choice; since he’s on the 40 man roster his inclusion opens the spot for Chapman the same as Mills. I picked Mills because he’s the oldest of three RHPs listed by Roster Resource as residing in AAA and I do want to spend a small portion of Trade Value on guys that can be a factor in Oakland to start the year. He’s certainly not a make-or-break piece for me.

Seems like an ok get for both sides.
thanks Grover.

I’d much rather trade Marco Gonzales than a solid OF prospect in any deal lol
Issue is, Chapman struck out 200+ times last year. Worst OPS of his career. Ugly trends.
He was still a league average hitter while playing outstanding defense, producing a 3+ fWAR season in the process.
Which is also his floor in 2022, based on the projections.
