In a rebuilding move, the Red Sox send two stars with World Championship experience to the contending Giants for struggling but high-ceiling Joey Bart. Bogaerts, whose arm is getting a little old, moves to second base with his potent bat, freeing La Stella for a true utility role. The durable Vazquez takes over primary catching duty. Bart learns game-calling skills from Kevin Plawecki and coach Jason Varitek. Liu, a sixth starter/long reliever type with three good pitches, and Ward, a better starter candidate coming off Tommy John surgery, balance the trade.
