With the apparent injury of Edwin Diaz, the Mets will be in desperation mode to acquire another high level closer. The Reds are not in a window to compete and may be able to cash in on Edwin’s brother Alexis. It would make for a great story to have Alexis come to the Big Apple to save the season and to support the recovery of his brother Edwin. With that being said, the Reds could look to capitalize on this opportunity. #1 target would be Brett Baty to play outfield. Would be a stretch but maybe a deal of Baty for Diaz, and a comp pick+ if the Mets want to overpay. If not maybe a package with a few bats (Mauricio/Ramirez/Vientos) and a solid pitching prospect.
I’m a believer that solid closers are more valuable on teams that are winning and can help them get to the playoff. Diaz can not help the Reds in 2023 and maybe not in 2024 get there. He’s a luxury.
