    Down vote.

Swapping Andrus for Swanson is pointless during an Oakland rebuild.

the A’s haven’t gone for whole-hog rebuilds in the past, so trading for someone like Swanson would allow them to stay competitive if everything breaks right.

It’s true, the A’s haven’t gone for whole-hog rebuilds in the past. When Oakland made offseason trades of it’s star-level talent (Hudson, Mulder, Haren, Shark, Donaldson, etc.) they focused on a blend of MLB ready talent and prospects. It would make sense for them to do the same if they deal Matt Olson.

But if you’re using the past as reference you’ve got to stick to the reference and in none of those deals did Oakland accept an MLB-ready player with only one year of team control. So either Oakland is going to do as they’ve done in the past and Swanson isn’t going to be an attractive return OR they’re going to do different… and there are a lot more signs they’d go whole-hog rebuild than anything else.
